Be a responsible citizen / GKAITATZI OLYMPIA, PRIMARY SCHOOL OF KARDAMENA, GREECE

Image
The students of the intervention class worked with great enthusiasm to create our comic on Pixton , ahead of the collaborative activity “Be a Responsible Citizen.” Our students chose the backgrounds, characters, and various decorative elements. Finally, they brainstormed and wrote the dialogues in Greek, so we could translate them into English together. We typed them into the application and submitted our entry for our collaborative activity.

Dive into Fractions (Designing Products with Recycled Materials)/ GKAITATZI OLYMPIA, PRIMARY SCHOOL OF KARDAMENA, GREECE

Another very interesting activity was implemented as part of our project. Together with the students of the intervention class , we collected various scrap materials such as paper, disposable plates, straws, old maps, and wooden sticks. Then, we began to imagine new forms they could take. We designed, colored, and cut. We used a cardboard box as the base for our project. We covered it with various pieces of paper and cardboard (in blue and green shades) that were left over from other crafts. Using a disposable plate, we created a fish. We also printed fraction circles on A4 sheets that we no longer needed. We designed droplets with unit fractions and equivalent fractions on cardboard from an old marker box. We divided wooden skewers into equal parts and colored the unit fraction. Using an old map, we created a cone-shaped holder to store our sticks. Furthermore, we cut triangles out of cardboard and wrote down percentages , using a small triangular box as their storage s...

The Journey of a Drop/ GKAITATZI OLYMPIA, PRIMARY SCHOOL OF KARDAMENA, GREECE

Image
The students of the intervention class participated in writing the collaborative story “The Journey of a Drop,” featuring Dami the droplet as the main character. Initially, the students read the Greek translation of the story parts that had already been written. Then, they discussed what could have happened to Dami next. Finally, they drafted their text in their notebooks. Once we corrected the texts, we chose the final version and entered it into the StoryJumper platform. We also make a drawing! After our turn was over, we followed along as the subsequent students continued the story. We couldn't have imagined such a plot twist! We were all excited with every new page. Well done to everyone!

Our field trip/ GKAITATZI OLYMPIA, PRIMARY SCHOOL OF KARDAMENA, GREECE

As a field trip for our project , we had a unique experience participating in the Nexus monArc program, organized by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The research team—consisting of professors, students, and staff from the National and Kapodistrian University, as well as collaborating universities from abroad—welcomed our students at the port of Kardamena . During the activity, the students were briefed on the project’s objectives, introduced to the research team's scientific instruments, and had the opportunity to take part in interactive activities , measurements, and observations regarding the quality of the marine environment. Additionally, they were given a guided tour of the research team's sailing vessel, ELISAVET . Finally, they observed and studied features of the coastal area, collected and assessed microplastic pollution , and gathered litter from the main beach of Kardamena. This experience provided a significant opportunity for the stu...

Designing our logo/ GKAITATZI OLYMPIA, PRIMARY SCHOOL OF KARDAMENA, GREECE

Image
One of the first activities of our project was to design our logo. The students of the intervention class worked in small groups and designed three different logos. One of them was selected for our participation in the project competition. My students thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Through the logo design process, they were introduced to Canva and collaborated with their classmates. They practiced discussion and collective decision-making. Furthermore, by trying to convey the project's message and ideas through visual means, they explored and practiced the use of symbolism. It was a pleasant and novel experience. Congratulations to the winning team!
