Dive into Fractions (Designing Products with Recycled Materials)/ GKAITATZI OLYMPIA, PRIMARY SCHOOL OF KARDAMENA, GREECE
Another very interesting
activity was implemented as part of our project. Together with the students of
the intervention class, we collected various scrap materials such as
paper, disposable plates, straws, old maps, and wooden sticks. Then, we began
to imagine new forms they could take. We designed, colored, and cut.
We used a cardboard box as
the base for our project. We covered it with various pieces of paper and
cardboard (in blue and green shades) that were left over from other crafts.
Using a disposable plate, we created a fish.
We also printed fraction
circles on A4 sheets that we no longer needed. We designed droplets with
unit fractions and equivalent fractions on cardboard from an old
marker box. We divided wooden skewers into equal parts and colored the unit
fraction. Using an old map, we created a cone-shaped holder to store our
sticks.
Furthermore, we cut
triangles out of cardboard and wrote down percentages, using a small
triangular box as their storage spot. We wrote the title of our project on an
old wooden tongue depressor. Finally, we added "googly eyes" and
Velcro stickers.
Our project was ready! We
thoroughly enjoyed the creative process, practiced measurements,
percentages, and fractions while building it, and additionally, created a
practical learning tool for the intervention class. In the end, we gave
our creation a "voice" using ChatterKid!
Additionally,
during our Student Webinar, we presented our 'Dive into Fractions' creation
to our project partners.
